Exploring New Waters.

Last year I was desperate for some fishing - trout or pike on the fly. I had spent a lot of time on Chew, Blagdon and Barrow tanks but had not really found any other waters to fish in my local area - Bristol.

Greg has access to some excellent waters in the midlands. I had been travelling back to my homeland of Derby on a regular basis for some fishing - but the South West, whilst having the benefit on Chew is not a gravel pit area. I needed to find some sport with a fly rod, that wasn't going to break the bank on a regular basis.

I scoured the internet and found Knowle Angling Association. This club has access to 4 rivers and 3 stillwaters. All for just £110 per year! I made contact with Keith Caddick the club secretary only to be informed that applications had all been allocated for this year. I'd missed out. I was gutted. I love river fishing for trout and I was hoping for some pike fly fishing on the still waters.

Anyway, late last year I got an email out of the blue from Keith Caddick asking if I wanted a season ticket for the coming season? Did I? You bet!

I signed up and got my pack through the post. I had no idea what to expect as I hadn't visited any of the waters. In the pack was a handful of hand drawn maps and a few other bits of info. Exciting! I felt like Anneka Rice!

Now, I've been busy over Christmas, We had our second child on Christmas eve and things have been hectic since then. Obviously I've been busy at work, this website has taken up a lot of my time and having 2 sons instead of the usual one has cut into my fishing time. I'm not complaining, I love my boys, but I am desperate for some fishing.

Tuesday for me is a family day. We always try and do something together. I suggested to the missus that we might go and have a look at some lakes and have lunch out. To my suprise she was well up for it! I think she feels sorry for me or is sick of me moaning. Either way I didn't care, I was going on an adventure!

We set off, the four of us in the van. The missus had the maps which actually made sense and we set off to the larger of the 3 waters - Chew Magna Reservoir.

This lake is set in beautiful countryside just at the back of a quaint village. The lake itself is about 5 acres in size and is stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout. It has a large dam at one end with a man made concrete run off into a small basin.

Overflow Basin -

This Basin looks really well oxygenated and must hold a fish or two. The Res itself looks really Pikey. As it's fed from a small river I think it must have a pike or two sneaking about in there. I didn't see any fish moving other than a few course fish but experience tells me that if there are coarse fish in there, there must be pike. There is no limit on fly size on this water as there is on the others so I can't wait to have a poke around, and see if I can nobble one out!

The water looks very low at the moment as can be seen in the following picture.

I would imagine that these stages should be just above the water line. I'm not sure if this is normal but the whole lake seems pretty fishable anyway. It would be interesting to find out what the normal level should be. If anyone reading this knows, then drop me an email.

Anyway, I really like the look of this water and can't wait to get down there and fish it proper :)

I forgot to mention, I left the missus and the baby dozing in the car whilst I took our 3 year old for a look around. We got back to the van with muddy boots, but luckliy she didn't notice :)

We stopped off for lunch at The Pelican in Chew Magna Village. I highly recommend this pub for food. It was probably the best lunch we have had this year. I opted for Gammon, eggs and chips, being the glutton I am, and the missus went for fish antipasti platter. Top stuff!

Suitably filled up with grub the missus suggested that we go and find another lake as it wasn't far away. It felt like my birthday! So off we set to Publow farm lake. This is a small pond of about an acre or so set just off the main road. It is long and thin and is very pretty. I'm not sure it will hold any pike but I'm pretty sure it will be a nice little water to fish on for trout.

After that we set off for Ackers Pool in Pensford. This is another small pond of just over an acre. There is a plaque on the fence -

Now we didn't see any clarinetists (is that a word even?) on our journey but we did see the only two anglers on our tour fishing this pool. Me and Rion (my 3 year old) had a few words with a friendly lad called Jamie who told us that he'd had a couple of pulls, and his mate who had not long left had caught 5 fish!

Rion insisted that I took his photo here :). You can see Jamie in the background. Now, if Jamie is the calibre of angler that Knowle Angling Association has as a member then I think they should be proud. He was friendly, polite and interested. A far cry from some of the anglers I have met on other syndicate waters. A credit to the club, and as my first experience of Knowle Angling Association members one that will be remembered.

Anyway, thats me done for now. A pleasant day spent with my family looking at new waters to fish. I can't wait to explore the rivers too!

The only thing missing was a fishing rod, but that will come. . . .  very soon.

Tight lines,

Ben
