£3.50

This fly uses the following materials..... One fish-shaped bit of 2mm foam for the inner body. One two inch length of Creature Skin, flattened with an iron. One suitable lightweight hook, 3/0 is about right. Two tiny bits of Raptor Fibre Road Cone Orange for the fins and another bit for the tail of the fly. One four inch length of 9mm Pearlescent Mylar tubing. One Pike Fly Rattle, the examples above contain a standard 21mm rattle but it would be interesting to try the new Magnum 26mm size. X-ray mono thread. Two Laser 12mm fishgills and two 8mm realistic roach eyes. Varnish and UV resin for the head. One STRAND of Spectrum Fibre Harmony Angel to cover up the hook shank if you so desire. GO AHEAD......SEE IF YOU CAN MAKE ONE!!!! The finished fly sits in the water with it's back just breaking surface, and it is easy to replicate the way a little fish swims along in the surface film with the occasional leap out of the water with the use of a floating line. It works brilliantly but I have to be honest here...I've only tried it once and that was in the depths of Winter, not exactly when you'd expect pike to be chasing little fry about so as yet it hasn't caught a pike for me. Come summer though, the pike will be active in the shallows around lily pads and weedbeds and I expect this is where the fly will come into it's own. Fishing like this would be a fantastic and really exciting way to catch a few pike....can you imagine a double chasing it as you make it jump and plop along the reedline?????? Following it and snapping at the tail before mashing it up BIG-STYLE??????? We'll have to wait and see............  It works much better of course if you tie the fly direct to Authanic wire rather than use swivels or clips to attatch the fly as these can rather affect the action somewhat adversely. You'll see from the pictures above that I have actually tied some flat versions that will sit flat in the surface film when at rest between pulls. This could be an important factor if the pike are feeding on dead or dying small fry. It could also be interesting to see how they would fish on a sinking or intermediate line and just left to fish "on the drop", a tactic that has taken me many pike over the last few years. THAT'S FLY TYING.......YOU CAN TAKE IT ANY WHICH WAY YOU LIKE FROM HERE......ENJOY!
