NEW LIFE TO OLD CORKS!

Corks used for handles/grips on fly rods or spinning rods are fast becoming old fashioned and a thing of the past, after all when was the last time that you saw cork on the handle of a carp rod or specialist pike rod? So why should fly rods be any different?

No matter how good the corks are on your rods, eventually they start to show signs of wear and nobody likes a rod to look scuffy or tatty. The traditional "fix" for this is to have a costly handle re-build done, or undertake this job yourself.

It's a messy, time-consuming job and although it might restore the rod to a brand-new looking finish, the new handle starts to deteriorate almost immediately.

Corks are such an old-fashioned idea, they were first used because nothing else was available that was so easy to work into shape, and comfortable in the hand. But it gets dirty and wears down over a period of time, especially on fly rods where the rod is in your hand and subjected to heavy use day in day out.

That's why no self-respecting carp or pike rod "wears" corks any longer, Duplon grips and handles being the norm these days.

This stuff could be the answer that you are looking for. It is easy to fit yourself with the aid of a boiling kettle of water, and rejuvenates a tired cork handle/grip in a few minutes.

The benefits of a wrapped handle have become apparrent to me over a period of time, so much so that now I wouldn't consider using anything else.

It's so easy to look after, is more comfortable in the hand, grip is increased and it doesn't become "slippery when wet" like traditional corks. And when it gets dirty you can clean it up in seconds, which is tremendously useful to someone like me who tends to keep tackle maintenance down to a minimum!

Despite the fact that PIKESABER is fitted with a "triple A" grade cork handle, the stresses and strains involved in chucking big lines and flies around is simply too much for old-fashioned cork grips so an alternative is called for in my opinion.

My own PIKESABERS are now more than two years old and the grips had started to look a bit tired as you would expect, so when I found this stuff I just had to have a go with it to see what happened. I was so surprised by my own reaction to it that I went ahead and did all three of my butts with X-Weave shrink-wrap, including my Float-tube butt section.

Initially I was worried that it wouldn't last long but this fear has been completely dispelled, my own butts have now been fitted with X-Weave for 12 months and there are no signs of wear at all, and I am completely happy with how my rods look and more importantly, how they fish.

The photos in the scrolling gallery above show you how easy it is to fit, and you can do any rod that you like whatever the make or type.

Try some and see for yourself what a good idea it is to X-weave your rod handles, in fact if you do it from new you will protect the original corks and preserve them in first-class condition for eternity, leaving the shape intact underneath. Brilliant product!

Supplied in 12 inch lengths (approx 30cms.), enough for any fly rod grip.
