RED VERSION OF THE HOLLOW ROACH PATTERN.

I've tied this up as an alternative version in a different colour scheme, not only as a colour change but I've incorporated one or two changes to the original.

What I've done is put a rattle inside a length of Mylar pearlescent tubing and pushed it inside the fly before tying it to the hook.

I have also tied the tail in with a different method. I cut a length of hot pink fibre from the bunch and cut it into three pieces, then laid them together roughly. I then tied a length of 20lb breaking strain fluo monofilament around it in the centre with a couple of granny knots, and pushed it through the Creature Skin. You might be able to see it inside the finished article.

I then tied everything to the hook and used Final Overcoat to bond it all together at the front of the fly, and again at the rear where the tail sticks out. This should make it a bit more durable in use. I then tied in a few more strands of the same fibre, prepared in exactly the same way in three bits at the front as a "hackle".

I then used three strands of Spectrum fibre (tied in the centre) at the front and wound it around before tying down, which gives a nice silvery sheen that shows through the mono tying thread, and forms a neat head. Two fluorescent orange eyes were then added, and the whole head covered in U.V. resin to finish.

Another interesting difference to the original is the way the Creature Skin was prepared before use. To create a nice neat finish to the tail end, I simply pushed the end of the tubing inside itself, which is really easy to do. When the "neck" of the tail is formed around the tail fibres by tying a length of mono aroud it, the result is a nice neat finish, instead of the tubing's frayed ends showing and spoiling the appearance of the finished fly. All dead easy, and most of it was done before the hook was even in the vice!

A lovely bright fly that is sure to get a bite or two, and more importantly perhaps, made me feel like I had created something new! I think it looks fab, and I can't wait to tie a few more in different colours. I can't wait to try it as well, as I think it will fish really well as a sunk fly on a deep line. I'm going to try it tomorrow, so I'll let you know how I get on. Tight lines!
